I believe that one of the factors that makes a piece of literature or evena movie a masterpiece is how well the reader can relate to the story. this isdefinitely a book everyone can relate to.
The adventures of tom sawyer is a literary masterpieces, written in 1876 bythe famous author mark twain. tom sawyer is a mischievous young boy who lives inthe small town on the mississippi river called st. petersburg. the story line issimple, the book reads like a biography or a memoir of a summer in tom sawyer'slife.
Tom sawyer seems to be the precursor of and the template for misfit kidssuch as dennis the menace, malcolm in the middle, and calvin and hobbs. whatmakes this story great is that tom sawyer represents everything that is greatabout childhood. the book is filled with tom's adventures playing pirates andwar with his friend joe harper. tom has a trusted friend, huck finn, who few ofthe adults approve of. the book is filled with ideas of how the world works,such as how pirates and robbers work, that are so innocent, they could only comefrom a child. it is a story filled with action, adventure, ingenious ideas,love, and schoolyard politics. the whole story is seemingly a complication ofwhat people did or wish they did during their childhood.
The book is a little difficult to read at first. personally, it takes me alittle while to get used to the 19th century dialect in the book. other thanreferring to persons of african decent in derogatory terms (which i'm sure usesterms even young children already know), the book would be an enjoyable read forpeople of all ages. i highly recommend this book for anyone looking to feelyoung again, if just for a few hundred pages.

I read the chinese version of “camille” a few years ago. at that time i wasdeeply moved by the main character marguerite gautier. “camille” or “the lady ofthe camellias” by alexandre dumas, fils, is the story of marguerite gautier, ayoung courtesan, or kept woman, in paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls inlove with a young man, armand duval, and then tries to escape from herquestionable past. unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends upreturning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge thatshe was a noble woman at heart. when i first began to read the book, i did notcare for marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as i got further into thenarrative, i realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonelywoman that she really was. she felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentlearmand duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person andnot for what she could do for him. it must have taken great courage formarguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along thatit was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. and it alsoshowed that marguerite really loved armand duval for she could even changeherself for him.
However, happiness didn’t last for long. when m. duval, armand's father,came to her, pleading for her to leave armand to save both armand's reputationand that of his younger innocent sister, marguerite saw a way to become pure ofheart, if not in body. she felt that it was her duty, because she loved armandso much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurtingarmand temporarily. she reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing thatsome day armand would forgive her. sadly, she died in debt and basically alone,except for her one female friend, julie duprat, who helped her during herillness. she had her journal sent to armand after her death, explaining why shehad made the choices she had. i think dumas's last few lines about margueritebeing the exception, not the rule were quite true, and i also agreed with hisview that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume thatall of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always bethe case. a person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, andtry to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them fromchanging their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. this appliesto both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement incrime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poormarriage choices; etc. and this is the fact, which exists in the wholesociety.
As far as the other characters in the book, i think marguerite was right insaying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her,the only exceptions being armand and julie duprat. of course, the comte de g.and comte de n. wanted her body and appearance. the duke needed to “wake up andsmell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. ifhe truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping”her himself. and lastly, prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used margueritealmost worse than the men. i also think she was jealous of the fact thatmarguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly lovedher.

I've just fininshed reading the first 4 harry potter books for about the5th time through, and they're just as magical and affecting as they have everbeen. everything is in here: suspense, adventure, mystery, humour, danger.there's even some pretty satisfying paybacks. the characters are fantastic andfantastically realistic. there are bad people who turn out to be good guys andgood people who turn out to be bad guys, just like life.
I think the thing i like best about these books is the message that it'sokay to be different - to be not "normal." i would love for everyone in schoolto have hear that message. it would probably reduce the bullying around theschool.
These books value real thoughts. much has been made of harry's rulebreaking, but only once in the series so far does he break a rule for arbitrarypersonal gain. most of the time he makes a decision that what's right is moreimportant than what's written. and you know what? life's like that sometimes. ithink it's great that kids are getting an example of how to do what's right evenwhen it involves breaking rules. the potter books also show that there areconsequences for rule breaking. if not getting caught and getting a detention,then a spell going wrong and someone getting turned into a cat. this shows thatwhen you make a decision to go against the rules that things may not go as youexpected and you have to take responsibility for the outcome.

The hero of this novel was oliver twist, an orphan, who was thrown into aworld full of poverty and crime. he suffered enormous pain, such as hunger,thirst, beating and abuse. while reading the tragic experiences of the littleoliver, i was shocked by his sufferings. i felt for the poor boy, but at thesame time i detested the evil fagin and the brutal bill. to my relief, as waswritten in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil andoliver lived a happy life in the end. one of the plots that attracted me most isthat after the theft, little oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care ofmrs. maylie and rose and began a new life. he went for walks with them, or roseread to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. he felt as if he had left behindforever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.
How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive afflictionremain pure in body and mind? the reason is the nature of goodness. i think itis the most important information implied in the novel by dickens-he believedthat goodness could conquer every difficulty. although i don’t think goodness isomnipotent, yet i do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happilythan those who are evil-minded.
For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for aperson. goodness is to humans what water is to fish. he who is without goodnessis an utterly worthless person. on the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘thefragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodnessundoubtedly is a happy and useful person. people receiving his help are gratefulto him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do goodto both the people he has helped and himself.
To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence ofthe goodness in humanity. they look down on people’s honesty and kindness,thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. as a result, they show nosympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. on theother hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. in their opinion, moneyis the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. if they cannotget profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are facedwith trouble and even hit a man when he is down. they are one of the sorts thati really detest.
