你老师说的没错，这不是推托，而是真正认真负责！ 确实有一些学校，特别是美国的学校，出于各种原因，有的对推荐信提出了具体内容和格式要求，有的甚至还设计了推荐表格，由推荐人填写，但其主要内容也和推荐信涉及的相同。
所以你还是了解清楚要申请的学校的要求后再联系老师为好。 大多数情况下，是学校只要求申请人提供二至三封推荐信，对格式没有具体要求。
但是，作为录取的参考依据，推荐信也应注意格式、文法等。推荐信的格式与一般书信基本相同。
有信头、发信日期、收信人姓名、称呼、正文、信尾谦称、签名、推荐人姓名、职称及工作单位等部分。但推荐信还应着重以下方面： 1.为了便于校方查阅，必须提到被推荐者的全名。
推荐者的身份不重要，当然你要是请院士来写也不错，但最关键是要说服招生委员会相信推荐人是真正了解被推荐人的。 2.必须交待与被推荐者的认识期间（何时开始认识或认识多久），认识程度（偶尔见面或密切接触）及关系（师生关系，上下级关系，同事等）。
3.对被推荐者的优点介绍及评价，这是推荐信的核心。主要包括被推荐者的天赋，学习成绩，研究能力，工作经验，学习精神，组织能力，品行及个性方面。
注意说辞应与其他申请材料如成绩单、获奖证书等相呼应，不要出现矛盾而使人误会。人无完人，所以同时也应提及其缺点，以做到公正客观。
最好通过实例说明。教授们要的不是完人，而只是学生，一个普通但足够优秀的学生。
4.必须表明推荐人的态度，是极力推荐还是有保留地推荐。 5.最好要求推荐人在信封封口处签名，以确保其真实性。
最好在“是否保留日后审阅推荐信的权利”一栏填“NO”。 6.最后别图省事，除非对方明文要求与申请一起寄。
否则推荐信应分开寄出。 下面是一个样例（理工科）： To whom it may concern: In the capacity of professor at the Department of Economics who has instructed Ms. Janet Jackson in the course of International Economics during the academic year of 1991 to 1992, I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce her to your prestigious MBA establishment. 推荐信正文写作注意事项推荐人中应该有一到二位是申请人的任课老师、导师、系主任或院系领导。
已经工作的申请人最好请你的上司写一篇推荐信。若能找到相关专业领域的学术权威或有国际知名度的教授（比如在国际性刊物上发表学术论文的人）担任推荐人，则会对申请有一定的帮助；但不必强求，如果推荐人不了解你，则即使写了推荐信也不能让对方学校的评审委员信服。
推荐人必须和申请人有一定的接触，他/她可以从学术成绩、科研能力和潜力、性格、特长、语言能力等各个方面推荐申请人。每个推荐人只应该评论与申请人接触到的方面，不能面面俱到。
推荐人的选择：推荐人最好选择自己的授课或论文指导老师、与自己工作有直接关系的上司，并不是推荐人的职位越高对申请人越有利。当然如果能找到大学招生负责人都认可或熟知的推荐人更好，如国际知名学者教授或国际知名公司的总裁等。
如果申请人是普通学生或普通职员而选择职位很高的推荐人（如学校校长），应该解释清楚推荐人是怎样了解到申请人的。同时在第一段就应介绍清楚推荐人和申请人的关系。

推荐信写作两大败笔： 写成类似中国老师给学生写的评语，每个人都适用。面面俱到，详略不当也是不可取的。
评价太过夸张，好象申请人的现有水平已经不需要任何进修或对申请人的过度吹捧使推荐人本身的层次和水平大打折扣。
