称呼位于信内地址下两行, 有不同的形式, 根据发信人和收信人之间的关系选择不同的称呼形式。比如建立业务关系的信函一般是发信人给收信人写的第一封信, 发信人可能并不知道对方公司的具体收信人是谁, 因此称呼语为“Dear Sirs”。随着女权运动的发展, 当不确定收信人的性别时, 现在多用“Dear Sir or Madam”或“Dear Madam or Sir”。当第二次或第三次再给同样的收信人写信时, 发信人应该知道收信人的姓名了, 此时“Dear Mr.”或“Dear Ms.”加对方的姓用于称呼语。而以后当双方更加熟悉, 距离更近时, 称呼可变成“Dear”加对方的名字。这同样是积极礼貌策略“使用伙伴识别标记”的采用。信函双方当事人之间的关系远近决定称呼语的使用。
