相传杨历岩的得名与汉代楼船将军杨仆有关。汉元鼎五年（公元前112），南越大臣吕嘉谋叛，汉武帝刘彻为了维护国家的统一，分四路出兵，征计南越叛兵。其中一路由楼船将军杨仆北水师数万人从南昌出发，溯赣州，再沿章水至大余，然后弃船登岸。并伐木造船，准备南下讨伐叛逆。吕喜获悉后，乘汉军忙于造船之际，组织叛军突袭汉军。杨仆将军率兵迎战，厮杀出一条血路，撤退到老鹰崖山地。汉军遭受袭击，伤亡惨重。水师经过整编和集训后，在老鹰岩下誓师南征，最后击败吕嘉叛军，为统一南越作出了重大贡献。邑人为了纪念杨仆将军功绩，将老鹰岩改为杨历岩。岩下的村庄，便叫杨历村。
